En Italia, casi dos tercios de las tierras agrícolas se han visto afectadas por la prolongada sequía, la que le ha costado a la industria agrícola alrededor de € 2.000 millones, según informó la asociación de agricultores, Coldiretti.
Según el medio internacional BBC los productores de aceituna, tomate y uva vinifera están entre los más afectados.
Anteriormente, se había declarado “estado de emergencia” en dos provincias del norte, mientras que la capital del país, Roma, se enfrenta al escenario de no tener agua potable durante ocho horas al día. Esto luego de que se ordenara un alto en el bombeo de agua de un lago cercano.
Coldiretti advirtió que el 60% de las tierras de cosechas están amenazadas por la sequía, la cual fue causada por los bajos niveles de lluvia y empeoró por una ola de calor, informó la BBC.
Al menos 10 regiones italianas están preparando solicitudes al Ministerio de Agricultura para que los declare como estado de calamidad natural, debido a la sequía.
Dicho ministerio anunció el viernes que se abrieron fondos de emergencia de unos € 700 millones con el fin de fortalecer y potenciar la eficiencia de los sistemas de riego del país.
El ministro de Agricultura, Maurizio Martina, dijo que el Senado había activado el Fondo Nacional de Solidaridad para apoyar a los productores, agregando que también solicitaron un apoyo financiero adicional a la Unión Europea (UE).
“Esta es una acción necesaria en el mediano plazo”, comentó el titular, agregando que los efectos del cambio climático se hacían cada vez más evidentes en la agricultura italiana.
