El rápido crecimiento de la población y una mala gestión del agua, junto a la contaminación de la misma, factores clave.

En India el agua se está agotando. El país está llamado a ser el más poblado del mundo antes de que acabe esta década y contará con 1.800 millones de habitantes para 2050 al ritmo actual, pero sus fuentes de agua no aumentan al mismo ritmo que crece su población, de hecho están disminuyendo, lo cual amenaza con convertirse en la gran pesadilla para el Gobierno indio.

Consciente de ello, el Instituto Nacional para Transformar India (NITI, por sus siglas en inglés) acaba de publicar un Índice Compuesto sobre Gestión de Agua en el país con el que busca potenciar una gestión más responsable del ‘oro líquido’ gracias a un mejor conocimiento de la situación en la que se encuentran los distintos estados y los recursos disponibles.

Al margen de la mala cooperación a nivel federal, la contaminación del agua, la mala gestión de las aguas residuales, el crecimiento descontrolado de las ciudades en muchas ocasiones bloqueando el cauce de ríos, etc. En lo que respecta a la agricultura, también tienen una tarea pendiente; En un país donde la agricultura representa el 80 por ciento del consumo de agua, es un uso más responsable de la misma en este ámbito. La extracción abusiva por parte de los agricultores del agua de los acuíferos para regar sus terrenos está haciendo que estos se agoten en muchas partes del país.

Pero para que la agricultura del país siga creciendo al ritmo necesario para alimentar a su población, hay que mantener su irrigación. En este sentido, los expertos apuestan por sistemas más eficaces, empezando por aumentar la capacidad de almacenamiento y transporte del agua, habida cuenta de que las lluvias en India se concentran en unos meses determinados del año, y por técnicas más avanzadas como el riego por goteo.
