Desde la época de los romanos ya existe documentación sobre prácticas de riego a partir de pozos, fundamentalmente de la zona oriental de la Rioja y de acequias y canales de la zona de Tricio y Calahorra. En la Edad Media, la mayor parte de los fueros regulaban de manera implícita el uso del agua del riego y cada pueblo tenía una zona de ‘huertos’ para alimentar a la población: hortalizas, frutas, patatas., y en estas zonas nunca se ponía viñedo. En los prados, suelos ricos y profundos, se plantaba hortaliza; en los suelos un poco más rústicos menos profundos y menos ricos se podía sembrar cereal, patatas., y, por último, las zonas no aptas para hortalizas, cereal o patatas se dejaban para olivos, almendros y viñedos. Éstas últimas zonas, las menos fértiles y con suelos pobres, siempre se han considerado las mejores para obtener uvas de alta calidad.
En los últimos años, estamos viendo como se están instalando cada vez más nuevas zonas de regadío en donde solamente hay viñedo: ¿regadío para un cultivo de secano?. Entre noviembre del 16 y abril del 2017 ha llovido aproximadamente 200 litros/m2. Comparando este mismo periodo con los de años anteriores, tenemos 330 l/m2 en la campaña 2015/2016; 400 l/m2 en la 2014/2015, y 280 l/m2, en la 2013/2014.
Es decir, llevamos un año bastante seco y todos estamos esperando a que llueva. Por ello, los viticultores riojanos han estado aprovechando para regar las parcelas y cargar los suelos de agua ante la falta de lluvia. Desde el punto de vista técnico/enológico, disponemos de una nueva herramienta, el riego, para obtener mejor calidad de uva, pero ¿esto realmente es así?. Así también se deben considerar otros aspectos que, quizás, no salen ganando con la generalización de la práctica del riego:
1. Pérdida de tipicidad entre parajes, pueblos y zonas: un factor muy importante para la calidad del vino es el concepto «terroir». Con el riego este carácter singular se reduce y hay mayor homogeneidad entre parajes.
2. Facilidad para aportar abonados mediante el riego: tendremos viñedos más productivos buscando cantidad de producción.
3. Reducción del carácter añada: al poder reducirse las diferencias entre un año seco y otro normal, carácter positivo años excesivamente secos.
4. Aumento de productividad en zonas y suelos históricamente menos productivos: se está alterando la naturaleza de suelos de alta calidad.
A la vista de estas consideraciones, parece que el riego en el viñedo es un factor de ‘no calidad’, aunque, como en todo, no hay certezas absolutas. El riego puede ser muy positivo pero la viña es un cultivo de secano. No deberíamos regar sistemáticamente ahora que tenemos facilidad para hacerlo, sino regar lo mínimo para que la viña siga sufriendo.
Con una mala gestión del riego volveremos a ver racimos en el suelo y excesos de producción. Regar debe ser una cuestión muy sopesada y ser conscientes de que, en función del momento vegetativo, la vid necesita un ligero estrés hídrico para obtener uvas y vinos de calidad. Una mala gestión no mejor la calidad sino todo lo contrario.
